EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a Bactrian camel, Camelus bactrianus, also known as a dromedary with two humps. The image is based on an illustration after nature by Christian Leinberger, as featured in Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, published by Blusse and Son in Nuremberg in 1771. Bactrian camels, native to the steppes of Central Asia, are distinguishable from their Arabian counterparts by their two humps, which store more fat for longer periods of time, allowing them to survive in harsh desert environments with limited water and food sources. The animal in this engraving is shown with its long, curved neck and shaggy coat, which helps protect against the extreme temperatures. The intricate details of the camel's anatomy are rendered with remarkable precision by the skilled engraver, Andreas Hoffer. The delicate shading and colouring bring the animal to life, highlighting its textured coat and the intricate patterns of its hump. The background features a barren desert landscape, emphasizing the camel's ability to thrive in such inhospitable conditions. Deliciae Naturae Selectae, or "Choice Delights of Rare Naturalia," was a popular natural history publication of the time, showcasing a diverse range of exotic animals and plants from around the world. This beautiful engraving of a Bactrian camel is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time, offering a glimpse into the natural world and the wonders it holds.
