EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of departure for Jacques Cartier, the intrepid French explorer, as he sets sail from the picturesque port of St. Malo in France, bound for the New World in 1535. With two Iroquoian captives in tow, Cartier embarks on a mission to reach the Iroquoian capital of Stadacona, located near present-day Quebec City, Canada. Cartier's previous expedition in 1534 had brought him to the shores of the St. Lawrence River, where he had made contact with the indigenous peoples and established a temporary settlement. However, the harsh winter conditions forced him to abandon his post and return to France. Determined to explore further, Cartier sets sail once more, this time with a larger expedition, including several ships and a more diverse crew. The image depicts Cartier's vessel, the "Little Caravel," anchored in the calm waters of St. Malo harbor, as the explorer and his men prepare to depart. The two Iroquoian captives, dressed in fur cloaks and bearing the marks of their captivity, stand on the dock, looking out at the ship with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. The French ships in the background, with their sails unfurled, are ready to set sail and carry Cartier and his crew across the Atlantic. This historic event marked a significant moment in the exploration of the New World, paving the way for further French colonization and the establishment of a lasting French presence in Canada.
