EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately detailed diagram from 1859 offers a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of a metalliferous mine of the 19th century. The exterior of the mine, depicted at the top of the print, shows a series of pits or shafts, each surrounded by a circular pithead structure. Horses and their handlers are shown working at the surface, likely hoisting buckets of ore or coal up to the surface using ropes and pulleys. Moving below ground, the interior of the mine is revealed in a cross-section view. A main shaft, or shafts, is shown in the center, with various tunnels and galleries branching off to the sides. Miners are depicted working at different levels, extracting ore from the rock face using picks and shovels. The use of timber supports is evident throughout the mine to shore up the walls and ceilings. The diagram also highlights the importance of ventilation in the mine, with several shafts shown dedicated to bringing fresh air in and removing stale air and gases out. Water management is also a key concern, with pumps and water channels shown to help drain water from the mine. This diagram provides a valuable record of the mining industry during the 1850s, showcasing the hard labor and intricate engineering involved in extracting coal and metals from the earth. Despite the challenges and dangers inherent in the work, the industry was a driving force in the economic growth and industrialization of the 19th century.
