EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases two remarkable marine mammals: the Common Seal (Phoca vitulina, also known as the Harp Seal or Grey Seal) and the Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris). The Common Seal, depicted on the left, is a small to medium-sized species, with a streamlined body and a short, rounded snout. The fur on its back is dark brown or grey, while the underbelly is lighter in color. This seal is widely distributed in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans and is known for its agility and ability to hold its breath for extended periods of time. On the right, the Northern Elephant Seal, also known as the northern elephant or big-nosed seal, is the largest species of the earless seal family. As its name suggests, this impressive marine mammal has a long, curved, and prominent nose, which can reach up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length. The Northern Elephant Seal is found primarily in the North Pacific Ocean, and is known for its large size, weight, and powerful build. This exquisite engraving not only highlights the physical differences between these two species but also captures their unique characteristics and the intrigue they held for naturalists and explorers of the time. The handcoloured detail adds a touch of artistry to the scientific documentation, making it a beautiful and educational piece for any collection focused on natural history or marine life.
