EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving showcases the vibrant plumage of the Cuban Trogon, also known as the Tocororo or Indented Couroucou (Priotelus temnurus). The image is based on an illustration by the renowned English naturalist and artist, Charles Hamilton Smith, and was published as part of Baron Cuvier's seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom," in London in 1828 by Whittaker. The Cuban Trogon is a native bird species to the Caribbean island of Cuba and is known for its distinctive iridescent blue-green and black plumage, with a white belly and a red bill. The bird's name, Tocororo, is derived from the Taíno language and means "thunderbird." The Cuban Trogon is a cavity-nesting bird and feeds primarily on fruit, although it also consumes insects and small vertebrates. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the natural history and ornithological exploration of the 19th century, providing a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the Caribbean region.
