EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Curly Mesquite, Hilaria cenchroides, also known as Ilaria cencroide or the Drooping Sheoak. The tree is native to Australia and is a member of the Casuarinaceae family, which also includes the Allocasuarina and Quadrivalvis species. The Curly Mesquite is unique for its curled and twisted branches, giving it an elegant and distinctive appearance. The Curly Mesquite is a nitrogen-fixing tree, capable of converting atmospheric nitrogen into a form that can be absorbed by other plants. This ability, along with its deep root system, makes it an important contributor to the health and productivity of Australian ecosystems. The tree produces small, round fruits that are edible and rich in nutrients, making it an important food source for both humans and animals. The fruits are often compared to the seeds of the Cashew tree, with a hard outer shell and a softer, nutritious inner layer. This beautiful illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and engraved by Devegni. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the true essence of the plants he depicted. This illustration is a testament to his skill and artistry, providing a vivid and accurate representation of the Curly Mesquite and its unique features.
