EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1792, showcases three fascinating marine creatures: the European lobster (Homarus gammarus), the edible crab (Cancer pagurus), and the Atlantic horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus). The European lobster, depicted in its dorsal view, is a large, armored crustacean with distinctive claws and a long, slender body. A popular delicacy, it is native to the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Next to it lies the edible crab, represented here in its ventral position. This crab is easily recognizable by its five pairs of legs, and its spiky, red-tipped claws. It is a common sight in European waters and is an essential component of various culinary traditions. The Atlantic horseshoe crab, shown both dorsally and ventrally, is a unique and ancient marine creature. Its distinctive horseshoe-shaped body is covered in small, blue spines, and it has ten legs, five on each side. Although it is not a true crab, it is often referred to as one due to its crab-like appearance. The Atlantic horseshoe crab plays a vital role in the marine ecosystem as a scavenger and a prey species for various animals, including birds and fish. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration, created over two centuries ago, continues to capture the imagination and fascination of young and old alike, providing a glimpse into the rich marine biodiversity of Europe and beyond.
