EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken on June 19, 1924, the first Lamas, or Tibetan priests, set foot on European soil. The Lamas' visit to Europe was facilitated by the persuasive efforts of British filmographer Captain John Noel, who was preparing for the filming of the Everest Expedition of 1924. Captain Noel, a seasoned mountaineer and explorer, had gained the trust of the Tibetan people during his earlier expeditions to the region. He saw an opportunity to bring the mystical world of Tibet to the Western audience through the medium of film. With the help of the British government, he invited a group of Lamas to Europe to participate in the Everest Expedition and to showcase their traditional culture. The Lamas, dressed in their colorful and intricately designed robes, are seen here disembarking from a ship at Southampton, England. They were greeted by a crowd of curious onlookers, who marveled at their exotic appearance. The Lamas were treated as celebrities during their stay in Europe, and they graciously obliged the crowds by performing rituals and blessings. The arrival of the Lamas marked a significant cultural exchange between Tibet and Europe. This photograph is a testament to the power of film and exploration in bridging the gap between different civilizations and fostering mutual understanding. The Everest Expedition of 1924, which went on to be a success, further cemented the relationship between Tibet and the West, paving the way for future collaborations and exchanges. This photograph, taken from the Illustrated London News Ltd/Mary Evans collection, provides a unique glimpse into a bygone era, capturing the excitement and wonder of a momentous event in history.
