EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving showcases the striking features of the Flatwhiskered Catfish, Pinirampus pirinampu, also known as the Black-spotted Green Pimelodus or Pimelodus insignis. The image is taken from Robert Schomburgk's "Fishes of Guiana," which was published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ichthyology, in Edinburgh in 1841. The illustration was produced by James Stewart and engraved by W.H. Lizars. The Flatwhiskered Catfish is native to the waters of South America, specifically in the Orinoco and Amazon river basins. As its common name suggests, this catfish possesses flat, whisker-like barbels that run along the underside of its snout, which it uses to navigate the murky waters of its habitat. The fish's body is elongated and slender, with a greenish-black coloration covered in small, black spots. Its pectoral and dorsal fins are translucent, adding to its ethereal appearance. The Flatwhiskered Catfish is an important species in the freshwater ecosystems of South America. It is an omnivorous fish, feeding on a variety of organisms, including insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. This catfish is also an essential food source for larger predators, such as caimans and jaguars. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the natural history of this fascinating species but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century scientific illustration. The use of hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art as well as a valuable scientific record.
