EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by renowned English engraver Peter Brown for his seminal work "New Illustrations of Zoology" published by B. White in London in 1776, showcases two intriguing bird species: the Golden-backed Bishop, Euplectes aureus, and the Orange-winged Pytilia, Pytilia afra. Both birds were part of the collection of Marmaduke Tunstall, an avid naturalist and collector from Angola and Benguela, respectively. The Golden-backed Bishop, also known as the Golden-backed Finch or the Golden-backed Weaver, is a native of central and eastern Africa. The male of this species is characterized by its striking golden-yellow back, black wings, and bright red eyes. The female, on the other hand, sports a more muted color palette with a brown back and a yellow belly. The Orange-winged Pytilia, also known as the Red-faced Finch or the Orange-winged Finch, is a small bird native to southern Africa. The male of this species is easily identified by its bright orange wings and red face, while the female sports a more subdued appearance with brown wings and a yellow belly. This exquisite engraving not only serves as a testament to the natural beauty of these two bird species but also to the meticulous skill of Peter Brown as an engraver. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these birds to life, allowing us to appreciate their unique features and marvel at their natural splendor.
