EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illuminated calendar print, dating back to 1846, showcases the beauty and intricacy of medieval illumination as depicted in Henry Noel Humphreys' "The Illuminated Calendar and Home Diary for 1846." The image for February features a quote from the Book of Romans, "Sapientia et Prudentia Iudex Est Dominus Sapientum," or "Wisdom and Prudence are the Judges of the Wise," framing a calendar with figures of St. Andrew and the prophet Ylaias. Above St. Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland, flies the saltire cross, while below, the figure of Ylaias, a prophet from the Old Testament, holds a scroll inscribed with the quote. Surrounding the calendar, various biblical figures and symbols adorn the page. To the left, the prophet Elias, or Elijah, is depicted with a fiery chariot, while to the right, St. Jacobus Major, or St. James the Greater, is shown holding a pilgrim's staff and a scallop shell. The month of March is indicated by a lamb, a symbol of the month, and the Latin text "Martii," meaning "of March." The calendar is filled with vibrant chromolithographs, which combine the processes of lithography and chromography to create rich, multicolored images. The print is further enhanced by gilt details, adding a luxurious and ornate touch. The design also includes various birds, fish, and foliage, adding to the overall visual appeal. Castles and other architectural elements add a sense of grandeur and history to the piece. This illuminated calendar print is a stunning example of the intricate and beautiful art of medieval manuscript illumination, showcasing the skill and artistry of the Duke Anjou's Book of Hours, which inspired this chromolithograph.
