EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1823, showcases an enchanting assembly of five distinct bird species native to the Americas. At the forefront, the regal Kalij Pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) stands proudly with its iridescent plumage, a striking contrast against the lush greenery. The male, adorned with a distinctive white neck, gazes intently at the viewer, while the female, with her chestnut-colored neck, blends seamlessly into her surroundings. To the right, the majestic Great Curassow (Crax rubra) graces us with its presence. The male, with his vibrant red wattles and helmet-like casque, towers over the female, whose plumage is a mottled brown. Both birds display their unique, powerful legs and long, curved beaks, which they use to forage for food on the forest floor. The Endangered Helmeted Curassow (Pauxi pauxi) is depicted in the lower left corner. This elusive bird is characterized by its striking, blue-black plumage, a large, helmet-like casque, and a white band on its neck. Its presence in this engraving is a rare and precious sight. In the background, the Band-tailed Guan (Penelope argyrotis) can be seen, with its distinctive, fan-like tail feathers and striking, blue-green plumage. This shy, ground-dwelling bird is a common sight in the forests of Central and South America. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration offers a glimpse into the natural world of the early 19th century, showcasing the diverse and captivating array of bird species that inhabited the Americas.
