EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Ladies' Legs, Tropaeolum pentaphyllum," is a beautiful botanical illustration of the five-leaved chymocarpus, also known as the Ladies' Legs or Five-leaved Tropaeolum. The image, created by Frederick W. Smith after S. Humble, was published in John Lindley and Robert Sweet's Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery in 1854 by G. Willis in London. The Tropaeolum pentaphyllum is a unique and intriguing plant, with its distinctive, five-lobed leaves resembling the legs of a woman. These leaves are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant, and the plant produces small, yellow or orange flowers on long stalks. The name "chymocarpus" refers to the fact that the plant produces a capsule that contains a milky, sticky substance, which was once believed to have medicinal properties. Botanical illustrations like this one were an essential part of the scientific community during the 19th century. They were used to document and record new plant discoveries, as well as to help identify and classify different plant species. The intricate detail and precision of this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the engraver and the dedication of the botanists and horticulturists of the time. The vibrant colors and intricate details of this illustration make it a stunning addition to any botanical collection or garden-themed decor. It is a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the importance of documenting and preserving it for future generations.
