EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1913, showcases the LCC-LFB (London County Council-London Fire Brigade) engines and crews at Shoreditch Fire Station, located at 140 Tabernacle Street in the City of London. Established in 1896 for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Shoreditch was one of many fire stations built during this era to serve the growing metropolis. As the widespread introduction of motorised fire engines began to revolutionise firefighting services, the need for numerous fire stations gradually decreased. Despite this, Shoreditch Fire Station remains operational today, having been replaced by a new station in 1964. In this image, we see a line of horse-drawn fire engines and their dedicated crews, ready for action. The horses, harnessed to the engines, display a sense of strength and determination, while the firefighters, dressed in their protective gear, exude a sense of readiness and professionalism. The fire station buildings, with their red brick facades and tall chimneys, stand proudly in the background. The appliances, adorned with the LCC-LFB insignia, are a testament to the advanced equipment of the time. The vehicles, with their large water tanks and extended ladders, were essential tools in the fight against the ever-present threat of fire in the densely populated city. This photograph, taken over a century ago, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of London's firefighting services and the vital role that Shoreditch Fire Station played in protecting the city during the 1910s.
