EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Jean Victor Dupin junior from Pierre Joseph Buchoz's Herbier Artificial, showcases the majestic Lebanon Cedar, Cedrus libani. The Lebanon Cedar, also known as the Cedar of Lebanon or Libanese Cedar, is a magnificent conifer native to the eastern Mediterranean region. Its lush, evergreen foliage and distinctive, pyramidal shape have made it a symbol of strength and resilience for centuries. In this particular illustration, the Lebanon Cedar is depicted in all its glory, with every detail of its cones meticulously rendered. The cones, which are arranged in clusters, are shown in various stages of development, from the tightly closed buds to the mature, woody cones that release their seeds. The tree's bark, which is characterized by its furrowed, reddish-brown surface, is also beautifully captured in the engraving. Surrounding the Lebanon Cedar are various other plants and natural elements, adding to the richness and diversity of the illustration. A starfish, with its intricate pattern of arms and spines, can be seen on the rocky shore at the base of the tree. A flowering plant, possibly a Stapelia hirsuta or a related species, is depicted in the foreground, its vibrant, tubular blooms contrasting with the muted colors of the cedar and the surrounding landscape. A carrion flower, likely a Stapelia daffrique, is also present, its distinctive, foul-smelling blooms attracting flies and other pollinators. This stunning illustration, which is part of a larger collection of over fifteen hundred European and exotic plants, is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving and documenting the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
