EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Nutrush, Scleria mitis, a rare and beautiful aquatic plant native to Mauritius and other tropical regions. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The intricate details of the Nutrush are expertly rendered by French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Nutrush is shown in its full glory, with its slender rhizomes and long, narrow leaves submerged in water, while its delicate, trifloral inflorescences rise above the surface. The three white flowers, each with a yellow center, are gracefully arranged on slender stalks. The engraving is executed in the stipple technique, which allows for a high level of detail and tonal variation. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of the Nutrush make this illustration a valuable addition to any botanical collection. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a groundbreaking work that showcased the natural wonders of the world, and this Nutrush illustration is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world that Jussieu and Turpin sought to document.
