EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Olive-naped Weaver, Ploceus brachypterus, also known as the Round-winged Weaver. The Olive-naped Weaver is a vibrant and distinctive bird species native to Western Africa. The engraving, created by William Lizars after an illustration by the renowned naturalist and illustrator, William John Swainson, was published in Sir William Jardine's Naturalists Library: Ornithology in 1837. The Olive-naped Weaver is easily identified by its long, olive-green and black plumage, broad, shafted tail, and distinctive nape, which is adorned with a bright yellow patch. This bird is a member of the whydah family, which also includes the Long-tailed Paradise Whydah, Vidua paradisaea, and the Broad-billed Paradise Whydah, Vidua hypochondria. The Olive-naped Weaver is a sociable bird that forms large colonies, often nesting in the same tree as other weaver species. They are omnivorous, feeding on seeds, fruits, and insects. The male builds a complex, woven nest, which is often decorated with brightly colored materials, and is used to attract a female mate. This beautiful engraving captures the intricate details of the Olive-naped Weaver's plumage and anatomy, providing a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this bird species. The artistry of Swainson's illustration and Lizars' engraving techniques bring the Olive-naped Weaver to life, allowing us to appreciate its beauty and unique characteristics.
