EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Christian Leinberger and published in Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae in 1771, showcases an intriguing collection of pipefish, trumpetfish, tropical fish, and blowfish from the Cabinet of Curiosities owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew in Nuremberg. The first three fish identified in the illustration are pipefish, specifically a Broadnosed Pipefish (Syngnathus typhle) and two unidentified species, Syngnathus sphidion and Sygnathus aequorens. These fish are characterized by their long, slender bodies and the presence of a pipe-like snout. Next, we see a Trumpetfish (Aulostomus maculatus), which is easily recognizable by its elongated snout that resembles a trumpet. The following fish is a Snake Pipefish (Entelurus aequoreus), which, as its name suggests, has a serpentine shape. The next three fish are various tropical species, but their identities remain uncertain without further examination. The final fish is a Blowfish or Fugu (Sphoeroides maculatus), a notoriously poisonous and toxic species of flatfish. The Blowfish is known for its ability to inflate itself when threatened, making it an intriguing and fascinating addition to this collection. This engraving is a testament to the natural wonders that captivated the minds of naturalists and collectors during the 18th century. It serves as a reminder of the importance of documenting and preserving the diversity of the natural world, even the most unusual and potentially dangerous species.
