The RAF Crew Memorial, Hartenstein Museum Grounds
This was the brainchild of Alan Hartley (standing beside the Memorial), the founder of the RAF Down Ampney Association, which remembered all the crews that flew the re-supply aircraft during Operation Market Garden. Alan raised thousands of pounds. Sir John Bond, Chairman of HSBC sponsored a 10, 000 donation in memory of Captain John Grayburn VC who won his award for actions at Arnhem. His father had worked at HSBC. General Anthony Deane-Drummond (who had escaped at Arnhem by hiding in a cupboard for 13 days) lent his support and Lord Ashcroft donated 1, 000. In Holland much co-ordination and arranging of local permssions to place the Memorial, was done by Frans Ammerlaan who also succeeded in having General Sosabowski posthumously awarded the Dutch Bronze Lion in recognition of the Polish Parachute Brigade. The eagle design was based on one in the collection of Major and Mrs Holt (whose faint reflection, as they took the photograph, can be see in the marble column during the unveiling on 15th September 2006). Date: 2006

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the unveiling of The RAF Crew Memorial at the Hartenstein Museum Grounds in the Netherlands, on September 15, 2006. The memorial was the brainchild of Alan Hartley, founder of the RAF Down Ampney Association, which honors the crews who flew the re-supply aircraft during Operation Market Garden. Alan's dedication and fundraising efforts resulted in thousands of pounds being donated to the project. One of the significant contributors was Sir John Bond, Chairman of HSBC, who made a generous 10,000 donation in memory of Captain John Grayburn VC. Grayburn had won his Victoria Cross for his heroic actions at Arnhem, and his father had worked at HSBC. Another prominent supporter was General Anthony Deane-Drummond, who had escaped from Arnhem by hiding in a cupboard for 13 days and lent his support to the cause. The memorial's eagle design was inspired by one in the collection of Major and Mrs Holt, whose reflection can be seen in the marble column during the unveiling ceremony. Much of the coordination and arrangements for placing the memorial in Holland were carried out by Frans Ammerlaan, who also succeeded in having General Sosabowski posthumously awarded the Dutch Bronze Lion in recognition of the Polish Parachute Brigade's role in the operation. This moving tribute stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the RAF crews who played a crucial role in Operation Market Garden.
