EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Rene Primevere for the supplementary lessons of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's famous natural history work, showcases two exquisite species of African trogons: the Red-crested Turaco (Tauraco erythrolophus) and the Narina Trogon (Apaloderma narina), also known as the Red-billed Trogon or Pauline's Trogon. The Red-crested Turaco, with its vibrant red crest, blue-green plumage, and distinctive yellow eyes, is a native of the forests of Central and West Africa. This bird is known for its loud, melodic calls, which can be heard echoing through the dense foliage. The Red-crested Turaco is an omnivorous species, feeding on fruits, seeds, and insects. The Narina Trogon, depicted in this engraving with its striking red bill, blue-green back, and black and white barring on its chest, is found in the forests of Central and East Africa. This bird is named after the French naturalist Madame de Narine, who was an influential patron of natural history in the 18th century. The Narina Trogon is an insectivorous species, feeding primarily on beetles, ants, and other invertebrates. This beautiful illustration, produced in Paris in 1838 by Pourrat Freres, provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these two remarkable birds. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of the engraving capture the essence of these exotic species and transport us back in time to an era when natural history was a source of wonder and discovery.
