EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Plee Jr. after an original illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre, showcases a vibrant underwater scene teeming with various tropical marine species. At the center, the Swallowtail Seaperch (Anthias anthias) and Striped Sweetlips (Plectorhinchus diagrammus) are the focal points of the image. The Swallowtail Seaperch, also known as the Red-lined Anthias, is a small, colorful fish with a distinctive swallowtail-like caudal fin. The Striped Sweetlips, on the other hand, is a larger, robust fish with striking vertical stripes and a flat, compressed body. Surrounding these two species are other intriguing marine creatures. The Whitecheek Monocle Bream (Scolopsis vosmeri), a small, attractive fish with a white stripe above the eye and a black spot on its side, can be seen in the lower left corner. In the upper right corner, a Lutjanid Fish, possibly a Diagramma or Vosmaerus species, is depicted with its distinctive elongated dorsal fin. This exquisite engraving is taken from the Natural History of Oviparous Quadrupeds, Snakes, Fish and Cetaceans, a comprehensive work by Bernard Germain de Lacepede, published in Paris in 1825 by Eymery. The meticulous attention to detail and the rich, vibrant colors of this print offer a glimpse into the beauty and diversity of the underwater world, making it an essential addition to any marine-themed collection or scientific archive.
