EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Heath after an illustration by George Shaw in his seminal work "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801, showcases two intriguing species of American lizards: the long-tailed scink (Lacerta longicauda) and the bar-lipped sheen-skink (Eugongylus rufescens), also known as the greater scink. The long-tailed scink, with its elongated tail and vibrant, mottled green and brown scales, is a native of the southeastern United States. This agile reptile is well-adapted to its environment, with a long, slender body and powerful limbs that allow it to move swiftly among rocks and debris. Its long tail serves as a balance aid and a defensive mechanism, allowing it to escape predators with ease. The bar-lipped sheen-skink, on the other hand, is a striking creature with a distinctive, bright red belly and black bars on its lips. Found in the Caribbean, this species is known for its unique coloration, which helps it blend in with its surroundings and camouflage itself from predators. Its scales are smooth and shimmering, giving it a sheen that adds to its allure. Both of these fascinating lizards were meticulously observed and illustrated by Shaw, a renowned naturalist and herpetologist of his time. This engraving, with its intricate details and rich colors, provides a window into the natural world of the early 19th century and serves as a testament to the beauty and diversity of the reptile kingdom.
