White-crested Black Polish Chickens: A Victorian Ode to an Exotic and Rare Breed This chromolithograph, created by Vincent Brooks Day & Son after an illustration by J.W. Ludlow for Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry published by Cassell, London, in 1890, showcases the striking beauty of White-crested Black Polish Chickens. The image features a proud and regal White-crested Black Polish Cock and Hen, their crested heads adorned with an impressive cascade of feathers. Bred by P. Unsworth, these rare birds were the winners of numerous cups and prizes during the late 19th century in various shows and exhibitions held in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Spalding, and Chesterfield, among other places. The White-crested Black Polish Chicken is a French breed, with its origins dating back to the 1870s. The intricate plumage of these birds, with their white feathers contrasting against the black body, was the epitome of the Victorian hen craze. Ornithology and game birds were popular subjects during this era, and the exotic and rare breeds like the White-crested Black Polish Chicken were highly sought after. The crest, known as the "creve coeur" or "crevecoeur," was a desirable feature in poultry breeding during this time. The crest was believed to protect the bird from predators, and the larger the crest, the more valuable the bird. Despite their popularity during the Victorian era, the White-crested Black Polish Chicken breed is now considered endangered. Today, enthusiasts and breeders continue to work towards preserving this rare and beautiful breed, ensuring that the legacy of these magnificent birds lives on.
