EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the remnants of an incendiary bomb that was dropped during a Zeppelin raid on the historic town of Bury St Edmunds in April 1915. The First World War reached the British home front in a devastating way during the early months of 1915, as German Zeppelin airships carried out a series of raids on English towns and cities. The townspeople of Bury St Edmunds were awakened in the early hours of the morning on April 30, 1915, by the sound of explosions and the ominous drone of the Zeppelin's engines. Over the course of the next hour, several incendiary bombs were dropped on the town, causing significant damage to buildings and properties. This photograph shows the aftermath of one such attack, with the charred remains of the incendiary bomb lying in the street. The bomb, which appears to be partially melted and deformed, bears witness to the destructive power of the air raids and the fear and uncertainty they brought to the British people. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of the war on civilians, and the resilience and determination of communities in the face of adversity. The date of this photograph is April 1915, and it is a poignant and powerful reminder of the realities of the Home Front during the First World War. The photograph is part of a larger collection of images documenting the impact of the war on British society, and serves as an important historical record of a pivotal moment in our history.
