EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Zander and Jarbua Terapon," is a captivating illustration from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was meticulously engraved by Corsi, with drawings by Jean Gabriel Pretre and direction by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The illustration showcases two distinct species of fish: Zander, or Sander lucioperca (1), and Jarbua Terapon, or Terapon jarbua (2). Also known as Sandat Comune, Terapone giarbua, or Handcoloured Sago Palm Fish, these species are native to the Moluccas and other parts of the Indo-Pacific region. The Zander, a freshwater fish, is depicted on the left side of the image, while the Jarbua Terapon, a marine fish, is shown on the right. The Zander is characterized by its elongated body, multiple dark stripes, and large pectoral fins. In contrast, the Jarbua Terapon displays a more compact body, a prominent dorsal fin, and a series of dark spots arranged in vertical rows. The background of the illustration features various plants, including the Sago Palm (Metroxylon sagu), which is indigenous to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. The Sago Palm is an essential food source for many tropical communities, providing starch extracted from the pith of the plant's trunk. Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century, is celebrated for his exceptional skill in capturing the intricacies of natural forms. His direction and Pretre's drawings resulted in this stunning and accurate representation of these two fascinating fish species and their environment.
