EDITORS COMMENTS
Britannia's Vigil: A Tribute to the British Spirit at Boulogne-sur-Mer, France This evocative photograph captures the majestic statue of Britannia, created by the renowned Belgian sculptor Felix-Alexandre Desruelles, standing proudly at Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. The statue, which commemorates the arrival of British troops in the town during World War I, was erected in the 1920s and stood tall at a height of 15 meters. Desruelles' masterpiece depicted Britannia, the personification and archetype of Britain, as a powerful and vigilant figure. She raised her trident aloft in one hand, symbolizing her control over the seas, while holding her shield in the other, protecting her homeland. Britannia's helmeted profile, carved in intricate detail, gazed out towards the English Channel, keeping a watchful eye over the waters. The statue, a testament to the enduring bond between France and Britain, stood as a beacon of strength and resilience. However, this iconic sculpture did not last long. In July 1940, during World War II, the Germans destroyed the statue and the supporting column, leaving only memories of its grandeur. Desruelles' Britannia remains an enduring symbol of the spirit of the British forces who arrived in Boulogne-sur-Mer during the early days of World War I. Her image continues to inspire awe and admiration, reminding us of the indomitable spirit of those who came before us and the importance of unity and resilience in times of adversity.
