EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Cabinet portrait photograph captures the elegant beauty of Mrs Emily Maria Louisa Leslie (nee Massy-Beresford) and her two beloved sons, Charles St. John Lawrence Leslie and Cecil George Leslie, taken in March 1884. Emily, dressed in a stunning Victorian gown with a high collar and intricate lace detailing, gazes warmly at her sons. The elder son, Charles, is seated on a chair to her left, wearing a smart suit and a serious expression. The younger Cecil, with a mischievous grin, stands to her right, holding a toy sword. Emily was the wife of Cecil Edward St. Lawrence Leslie, whom she married on October 31, 1876. The family portrait beautifully encapsulates the spirit of the 1880s, an era of elegance, refinement, and family values. Charles, born in 1877, tragically passed away in 1891 at the young age of 14. Cecil, born in 1879, went on to serve his country with distinction, rising to the rank of Major in the 3rd Dragoon Guards (Prince of Wales Own) and receiving the Military Cross (M.C.) for his bravery in battle. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the love and pride that Emily had for her sons, and the legacy they left behind. The intricate details of the dress, the boys' expressions, and the warm lighting all contribute to the timeless beauty of this family portrait.
