This evocative photograph captures the daily life of a rubber plantation in Malaysia during the 1910s. The image shows an overseer, dressed in European attire and seated on a bicycle, overseeing a group of coolies, or laborers, as they manually tap rubber from the trees using buckets. The coolies, dressed in loincloths and barefoot, work in a line, each carrying their full buckets on their heads. The overseer, with a watchful eye, ensures that the work is progressing efficiently and that the laborers are meeting their quotas. The use of bicycles as a means of transportation for the overseer was a common sight on plantations, allowing them to easily move around the vast estates to manage their workforce. This photograph provides a glimpse into the labor-intensive nature of rubber production during the colonial era, with the coolies forming the backbone of the industry, providing the manual labor required to extract the valuable latex from the rubber trees. The administration of the plantation relied heavily on the efficient management of the workforce, with the overseer playing a crucial role in ensuring that production targets were met.
