This evocative image captures the defiant spirit of the Chinese rebels during the Taiping Rebellion, which lasted from 1850 to 1864 and is considered one of the most cataclysmic events in Chinese history. The rebellion was led by Hong Xiuquan, who claimed to be the younger brother of Jesus Christ and the brother of the Han Chinese goddess Mazu, and gathered a vast following of peasants and soldiers disillusioned with the ruling Manchu Qing dynasty. The rebels, as depicted in this photograph from 1857, are dressed in a unique combination of traditional Chinese clothing and makeshift military uniforms. Their faces are etched with determination and resolve, as they brandish their weapons and stand ready for battle. The image offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these rebels, who sought to overthrow the Qing dynasty and establish a new, egalitarian society based on Confucian principles.
