EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the moment when the once-powerful Russian Communist leader, Leon Trotsky, also known as Lev Davidovich Bronstein, was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1828, following his expulsion from the Communist Party the previous year. The photo, titled "Simplicissimus Attacks Trotsky with Red Knives," depicts a menacing figure, known as Simplicissimus, a symbol of the mob mentality and violence that had come to characterize the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin's rule. Trotsky, with a determined expression on his face, braces himself against the onslaught of the red-clad attacker. The image serves as a stark reminder of the political turmoil and violence that marked the end of Trotsky's tenure in the Soviet Union. The date of the photograph is not known, but it is believed to have been taken during Trotsky's exile in Turkey, where he was eventually assassinated in 1940. Despite his fall from grace, Trotsky remains a significant figure in modern history, known for his role in the Russian Revolution and his advocacy for a more democratic form of communism.
