Lee Enfield. 303 in No 5 Mk I bolt action rifle, 1944 (c); known as the Jungle Carbine; fitted with flash eliminator, sling swivels and a rubber cushion on the buttplate. Operations in the Far East convinced the British army that a lighter version of the Lee-Enfield rifle would be more suited to jungle warfare. The No 4 Mark 1 rifle was shortened, a flash-hider fitted to the muzzle and to counteract the increased recoil due to the short barrel and light weight, a rubber butt-pad was introduced. First produced in the autumn of 1944, it was widely issued to troops in the Far East, but its still excessive recoil and muzzle-blast made it an unpopular weapon. Date: circa 1944

This photograph captures a close-up view of a Lee Enfield.303 in No 5 Mk I bolt action rifle, produced in 1944. Known as the "Jungle Carbine," this weapon was a modified version of the standard-issue Lee-Enfield rifle, specifically designed for use in the challenging conditions of jungle warfare in the Far East during World War II. The No 5 Mk I rifle was shortened, and a flash-eliminator was fitted to the muzzle to reduce the visibility of muzzle flash in the dense jungle environment. In addition, sling swivels and a rubber cushion on the buttplate were added for improved comfort and functionality. However, despite these modifications, the No 5 Mk I rifle remained an unpopular weapon among troops due to its excessive recoil and muzzle-blast. Operations in the Far East had convinced the British army that a lighter version of the Lee-Enfield rifle would be more suited to jungle warfare, leading to the development of the No 4 Mark 1 rifle. The No 5 Mk I rifle was first produced in the autumn of 1944 and was widely issued to troops in the Far East. Despite its shortcomings, this weapon played a significant role in the British military's efforts during World War II.
