?Capture & Death of the Shahzadaghs?, 1857. Coloured lithograph from The Campaign in India 1857-58 from drawings made during the eventful period of the Great Mutiny, illustrating the military operations before Delhi and its neighbourhood'. A series of 26 coloured lithographs by W Simpson, E Walker and others, after G F Atkinson, published by Day andSon, 1857-1858. Associated with the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). On 21 September 1857, Lieutenant (later Major) William Hodson received the surrender of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Moghul Emperor, after the fall of Delhi. The next day he arrested three of the royal princes (Shazadas) in front of a large crowd outside the city walls. Hodson shot them in cold blood after they had freely given up their arms. Although the entire royal family had surrendered peacefully, several more of the Emperor?s sons were tried and hanged for ?rebellion?. Date: 1858

This powerful and haunting image captures the tragic events of the Indian Mutiny in 1857, specifically depicting the "Capture & Death of the Shahzadaghs". The coloured lithograph from "The Campaign in India 1857-58" portrays a scene of great turmoil and violence during this tumultuous period.
In the illustration, we see Lieutenant William Hodson receiving the surrender of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Moghul Emperor, after the fall of Delhi. The next day, Hodson arrests three royal princes (Shazadas) in front of a large crowd outside the city walls. Shockingly, Hodson cold-bloodedly shoots them after they had given up their arms.
This brutal act symbolizes the ruthless suppression of rebellion by British forces during this time. Despite peaceful surrenders by many members of the royal family, several more sons were unjustly tried and hanged for their alleged involvement in rebellion.
