EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph showcases a pair of silver-mounted nail scissors recovered from the wreckage of RMS Titanic by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett. The scissors, which date back to 1910, were among the numerous personal effects and belongings that were retrieved from the bodies of victims following the tragic sinking of the renowned ocean liner in April 1912. The scissors are of two-piece construction, with each handle adorned with intricate fleur-de-lys motifs. One handle bears a full set of hallmarks from Birmingham in 1910, along with the sponsor's mark L and S for Levi and Salaman. The other handle carries similar hallmarks but is dated 1911. The handles, measuring approximately 13/16 inches wide, 2.3/8 inches long, and 5/32 to 3/16 inches deep, are exquisitely crafted, adding to the elegance of the scissors. The scissors themselves measure approximately 4.7/16 inches long and weigh 15.5 grams gross. The rusted steel blades, while no longer functional, add to the historical significance of this poignant artifact. The indistinct cartouche on one handle, possibly originally enclosing a lion passant, further adds to the mystery and intrigue surrounding these recovered items from the depths of the North Atlantic. This photograph, offered by Henry Aldridge & Son Ltd. through Mary Evans Prints Online, serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories and personal belongings lost during the Titanic disaster, and the ongoing efforts to recover and preserve a piece of maritime history.
