When News Arrives that the Prussians are Attacking Verdun - The Mobilization of the Garde Nationale in Paris, September 1792

EDITORS COMMENTS
As the sun rose over Paris on the morning of September 17, 1792, the tranquility of the city was shattered by the arrival of disturbing news. Riders on horseback galloped through the streets, bearing word that the Prussian army, under the command of the Duke of Brunswick, was advancing on the fortified city of Verdun, located in the northeastern part of France. The French Revolution, which had begun just over a year earlier, was now facing its first major military threat from an external enemy. The people of Paris, who had only recently taken up arms to defend their city during the storming of the Bastille, were determined not to let their newfound revolutionary spirit falter. In response to the news, the Garde Nationale, the newly formed militia made up of ordinary citizens, was called upon to leave Paris and join the fight against the Prussians. As the Garde Nationale prepared to depart, crowds gathered on the Pont Neuf, a historic bridge that spanned the Seine River, to bid them farewell and offer their support. The scene was one of raw emotion, as families and friends embraced their loved ones, some weeping, others cheering and waving handkerchiefs. The air was filled with a sense of determination and resolve, as the people of Paris understood that the fate of their young republic hung in the balance. The Garde Nationale, bolstered by the support of their fellow citizens, marched out of Paris, leaving behind a city that was now a symbol of the revolutionary spirit. The events of September 1792 marked a pivotal moment in the French Revolution, as the people of France rallied together to defend their country against foreign invasion. This powerful image, captured on a print, serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the French people during a time of great upheaval and uncertainty.
