EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of respite during the tumultuous events of World War II. Taken on Sunday, 20 March 1939-1945, in Brussels, Belgium, the image shows German military commanders and soldiers gathered around a table for a meal. The scene is set in a grand, ornate dining room, with heavy curtains drawn back to reveal large windows overlooking the city. The soldiers, dressed in their uniforms, sit at the table, some with their heads bowed in conversation, while others engage in animated discussions. At the head of the table, two military commanders, dressed in their full regalia, preside over the meal. The air of camaraderie and familiarity among the men is palpable, yet the backdrop of war looms large. Belgium had been invaded by Germany just days prior, on 10 May 1940, and the country would remain under German occupation until the end of the war. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the human side of war, where even in the midst of conflict, soldiers found moments to gather and share a meal with their comrades.
