This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy in 1837, showcases two magnificent birds of prey native to the Eastern Hemisphere: the Oriental honey buzzard (Pernis ptilorhyncus) and the white-tailed hawk (Buteo albicaudatus). The Oriental honey buzzard, depicted on the left, is a large bird with a distinctive appearance. It has a broad wingspan, a long, curved beak, and a slender body. The bird's plumage is predominantly brown with black and white markings, creating a striking contrast. The Oriental honey buzzard is a bird of prey that feeds primarily on honeybees and other insects, making it an essential predator in its ecosystem.
