EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Jussieu's Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy in 1837, showcases two magnificent birds of prey native to the Eastern Hemisphere: the Oriental honey buzzard (Pernis ptilorhyncus) and the white-tailed hawk (Buteo albicaudatus). The Oriental honey buzzard, depicted on the left, is a large bird with a distinctive appearance. It has a broad wingspan, a long, curved beak, and a slender body. The bird's plumage is predominantly brown with black and white markings, creating a striking contrast. The Oriental honey buzzard is a bird of prey that feeds primarily on honeybees and other insects, making it an essential predator in its ecosystem. On the right, the white-tailed hawk, also known as the pale harrier, is shown with its wings spread wide. This bird of prey is characterized by its white tail, which contrasts sharply with its brown body and wings. The white-tailed hawk is a diurnal hunter, feeding on a variety of prey, including rodents, reptiles, and birds. The intricacy and detail of this engraving are truly remarkable. The work was produced by a team of skilled artisans, including the illustrator J.G. Pretre, engraver Terreni, and the director Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The use of the stipple engraving technique allowed for a high level of detail and texture, resulting in an image that captures the essence of these magnificent birds. This beautiful piece of natural history art serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists in the world and the importance of preserving it for future generations. The Oriental honey buzzard and white-tailed hawk continue to thrive in their respective habitats, but they face various threats, including habitat loss and human persecution. It is essential that we continue to appreciate and protect these magnificent creatures and their habitats.
