The outbreak of the rebellion in the United States 1861

The outbreak of the rebellion in the United States 1861. A grand allegory of the Civil War in America, harshly critical of the Buchanan administration, Jefferson Davis, and the Confederacy. In the center stands Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath. She is flanked by the figures of Justice (unblindfolded, holding a sword and scales) and Abraham Lincoln. Principal figures (from left to right) are: Confederate president Jefferson Davis (beneath a palm tree about whose trunk winds a poisonous snake), James Buchanan (asleep), his secretary of war John B. Floyd, who was accused of misappropriation of government funds (raking coins into a bag), Justice, Columbia, Lincoln, Gen. Winfield Scott (in military uniform), and various figures exemplifying the generosity and suffering of the Northern citizenry. The left foreground is filled with Confederate soldiers, some of them engaged in tearing the Union flag from the hands of other soldiers. In the background are scenes of war. In contrast, on the right, the sun rises over mountains in the distance beyond a prosperous countryside. The print is evidently a companion piece to The End of the Rebellion in the United States, 1865, (no.1866-1), a lithograph designed by Charles Kimmel and published by Kimmel & Forster in 1866. The same New York firm issued hundreds of illustrated patriotic envelopes during the Civil War. Date c1865. The outbreak of the rebellion in the United States 1861. EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful and evocative print, titled "The Outbreak of the Rebellion in the United States 1861," offers a scathing allegorical critique of the events leading up to the American Civil War. The image, created around 1865, depicts Liberty in the center, dressed in a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath, symbolizing freedom and victory. Flanking her are Justice, represented by an unblindfolded figure holding a sword and scales, and Abraham Lincoln. The principal figures in the scene include Confederate President Jefferson Davis, who lies beneath a palm tree with a poisonous snake coiled around its trunk, symbolizing the corrupt and treacherous nature of the Confederacy. To Davis' left, an indolent James Buchanan, the US President at the time, is shown asleep, representing his perceived inaction and lack of leadership during the crisis. John B. Floyd, Buchanan's secretary of war, is shown raking coins into a bag, alluding to his alleged misappropriation of government funds. Justice stands between the corrupt leaders and the embattled figures of Columbia, Lincoln, and General Winfield Scott, who don military uniforms. In the foreground, Confederate soldiers tear the Union flag from the hands of their comrades, while in the background, scenes of war unfold. On the right, the sun rises over mountains in the distance, beyond a prosperous countryside, symbolizing the hope for a peaceful resolution and the eventual triumph of the Union. This print is a companion piece to "The End of the Rebellion in the United States, 1865," and was published by Kimmel & Forster in New York. The firm is known for issuing hundreds of illustrated patriotic envelopes during the Civil War. This print offers a poignant and critical commentary on the events of the time, reflecting the tumultuous period in American history.
