During the tumultuous events of the Paris Commune in 1871, the column and its statue were destroyed. The Communards, a revolutionary group seeking to overthrow the French government, saw the symbol as a reminder of the oppressive regime they sought to overthrow. Despite the destruction, the column and statue were eventually replaced, thanks to the efforts and financial support of the renowned French painter Gustave Courbet. The replacement was a testament to the resilience of the French people and their commitment to preserving their history.
