Babcock and Wilcox 6 ton Steam Roller YB7976 Toby

Babcock and Wilcox 6 ton Steam Roller YB7976 Toby (msn 95/4009). Seen with a 1955 Standard 10 motor car 200CPJ at a 1959 Walford Cross auction. Built in 1925 to the design of Messrs. Clayton & Shuttleworth Ltd. who had been taken over by Babcock & Wilcox in 1924. YB7976 is one of eight delivered to W W Buncombe of Highbridge, Somerset in January 1926, where it worked until 1966. Only five Babcock & Wilcox rollers survive, two 6 ton and three 10 ton models. (Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) began in 1867 with one patent, two friends and an unwavering commitment to reliable and effective innovation. When Stephen Wilcox first avowed that here must be a better way to safely generate power, he and George Babcock responded with the design for the first inherently safe water-tube boiler, and the company was born. This challenge to continuously improve endures today, over 150 years later). Date: 1959

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the Babcock and Wilcox 6 ton Steam Roller YB7976 Toby, manufactured in 1925, is seen alongside a 1955 Standard 10 motor car 200CPJ at a 1959 Walford Cross auction. The steam roller, msn 95/4009, was built to the design of Clayton & Shuttleworth Ltd., a company that had been taken over by Babcock & Wilcox in 1924. YB7976 is one of only eight of these rollers that were delivered to W.W. Buncombe of Highbridge, Somerset in January 1926, where it remained in service until 1966. With only five Babcock & Wilcox rollers surviving today, this historic vehicle is a rare find. Babcock & Wilcox, founded in 1867, began with one patent, two friends, and an unwavering commitment to reliable and effective innovation. When Stephen Wilcox expressed his belief that there must be a better way to safely generate power, George Babcock responded with the design for the first inherently safe water-tube boiler. This challenge to continuously improve endures today, over 150 years later. Although the company is renowned for its industrial prowess, this photograph showcases a more personal side of Babcock & Wilcox's history. The steam roller, a vehicle used for transportation and transporting materials, stands as a testament to the company's ingenuity and its commitment to creating solutions that have shaped the world. The steam roller's presence at the Walford Cross auction in 1959 adds an intriguing layer to its story. The image captures a moment in time when the old and the new coexisted, as the steam-powered technology of the past was being replaced by the internal combustion engines of the future. This photograph is a reminder of the rich history of innovation that Babcock & Wilcox has brought to the world, and the enduring legacy of the steam roller YB7976 Toby.
