EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Boeing XB-47 Stratojet 46-0065, the very first prototype of the revolutionary B-47 bomber, which took to the skies for the first time on December 17, 1947. The B-47 was a groundbreaking aircraft for its era, being the world's first jet-powered bomber and the United States' first long-range strategic bomber. The image, believed to have been captured around 1948, depicts the XB-47 in its prime, showcasing its sleek and innovative design. The Stratojet's distinctive wing configuration, known as a swept-wing design, was a significant departure from the conventional straight-wing designs of the time. This design feature, along with its jet engines, enabled the B-47 to achieve higher speeds and greater range than its propeller-driven counterparts. Unfortunately, this particular XB-47 prototype met an untimely end on May 11, 1949, during an approach to Moses Lake Air Force Base in Washington State. The cause of the crash was attributed to a stall, a dangerous aerodynamic condition where the wings stop generating lift, leading to a descent. Despite this unfortunate incident, the XB-47 paved the way for the development of the B-47 Stratofortress, which went on to serve as the backbone of the United States' strategic bomber fleet during the Cold War. This photograph serves as a testament to the pioneering spirit of aviation and the relentless pursuit of innovation in the field of aeronautical engineering during the 1940s.
