EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the sole surviving Miles M.71 Merchantman U-21 (msn 6695), with the unwanted Miles M.33 Monitor target-tugs in the background, at Woodley Aerodrome in 1947. The Miles M.71 Merchantman U-21, registered as U-21 and Number 6695, made its first flight on August 7, 1947. It was initially allotted the B-Class Registration G-AILJ and later demonstrated at the 1947 Society of British Aircraft Constructors (S.B.A.C.) Show at Radlett in September of that year. Unfortunately, Miles Aircraft Company went bankrupt in 1948, and the Merchantman U-21 was unceremoniously scrapped. The image offers a glimpse into the post-war aviation scene, with the Merchantman U-21 standing out as a testament to the innovations of its time, surrounded by the stored Monitor target-tugs. This photograph, taken in 1947, is a poignant reminder of the history of aviation and the fleeting nature of technological advancements.
