Kearny, a distinguished United States Army officer, had previously gained fame for his valor in the Mexican-American War. Here, he leads his troops from the front, his back to the chaos of the battlefield, with unwavering determination. The American flag flutters proudly behind him, symbolizing the cause for which he and his men were fighting. Kearny's horse, sensing the intensity of the situation, tenses, ready to spring into action. The general's intense focus and the raw emotion etched on his face convey the gravity of the moment.
