EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration from the 1880s showcases a charming portrait of three distinct breeds of pigeons: the Burmese, or Florentine, the Starling, and the Spot Fairy, also known as the Saxon Fairy Swallow pigeon. The Burmese pigeon, now commonly referred to as the Florentine, is depicted at the top of the illustration. Its mottled markings and more curved neck set it apart from the other breeds. The Burmese pigeon was a popular fancy pigeon breed during the Victorian era, with its unique blend of black and green plumage making it a favorite among collectors. To the left of the illustration, a Starling is presented with its distinctive white bars on its wing and breast. The Starling's unique head, marked with a small spot, and oddly feathered feet add to its intriguing appearance. The Starling is not a breed of pigeon, but rather a separate bird species, and it is interesting to note that the illustrator has included it in this grouping of pigeon breeds. Lastly, the Spot Fairy, or Saxon Fairy Swallow pigeon, is illustrated on the right. This rare and exotic breed is easily identified by its unique spot on its head and oddly feathered feet. The Spot Fairy was also known as the "Fairy Swallow" due to its delicate, ethereal appearance and the belief that it was a magical creature. The illustration's attention to detail and the clear differentiation of the features of each breed make it a fascinating glimpse into the history of pigeon breeding and the fascination with exotic and unusual birds during the Victorian era.
