EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, taken around 1929, we find a young Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, later to become the Duke of Edinburgh and the consort of Queen Elizabeth II, enjoying a carefree moment on the beach with his family. The future monarch, born in 1921, is seen riding a pony, with his eldest sister, Princess Margaret of Greece and Denmark (1905-1981), looking on from beside him. To the left, Prince Michael of Romania, a cousin of Prince Philip, rides his own pony, accompanied by his mother, Princess Helen of Romania (formerly Princess Helen of Greece), who is dressed in a stylish bathing suit and hat. The Greek and Danish royals are spending a leisurely day at the shore, their laughter and joy evident in their expressions. The sun casts a warm glow over the scene, and the clear blue water and sandy beach create a picturesque backdrop. The image captures a moment of childhood innocence and happiness, offering a glimpse into the early lives of these future monarchs and nobles. Prince Philip and his family spent much of their childhood in Greece, but they were forced to leave the country following a revolution in 1922. The family eventually settled in France, where they continued to live until Prince Philip joined the British Royal Navy in 1939. This photograph serves as a reminder of their idyllic past and the close bond between the siblings. The image is a beautiful testament to the rich history of European royalty and the shared experiences of these young royals during their childhood. It also highlights the importance of family and the joy that simple moments, like a day at the beach on horseback, can bring.
