The placard was produced by the Stop the War Coalition, an organization established in 2001 to coordinate campaigns and demonstrations against the "wars on terror" in Iraq and Afghanistan. The image captures the spirit of the protests held in Manchester on September 23, 2006, and in London and Glasgow on March 15, 2008, as well as in London on October 24, 2009, November 20, 2010, and October 8, 2011. The protests were a response to the ongoing military operations in Iraq, known as Operation TELIC, which commenced in 2003 and lasted until 2011, and in Afghanistan, known as Operation HERRICK, which began in 2001 and continued until 2014. Designed by renowned British graphic designer David Gentleman, the placard is a testament to the collective voice of those who opposed the wars and called for the safe return of the troops. The image is an important historical record of a significant period in recent British history and a powerful symbol of the public's desire for peace and an end to military conflict.
