This image, taken from the seminal work "American Ornithology" by John James Audubon and published in 1835, showcases four exquisite avian species: the Red Owl, Warbling Flycatcher, Purple Finch, and Brown Lark. The Red Owl (Strix rubra), depicted in the upper left corner, is a nocturnal bird of prey with distinctive red-orange eyes and ear tufts. Its large, round head and broad, wingspan make it a formidable hunter in its woodland habitat. The anatomy of the owl's ear, which is shown in detail, is essential for its hunting abilities, as it relies on its acute hearing to locate prey.
