EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intense focus and determination of two Royal Flying Corps (RFC) crewmen, Harold Auerbach and observer Bowen-Buscarlet, as they prepare for a mission during the final year of the First World War. The scene is set in Clairmarais, a small town in the Pas de Calais region of Northern France, which was a significant base for British military aviation operations. Harold Auerbach, born in 1897, is seen wearing a leather flying helmet and goggles, his eyes fixed on the horizon as he takes the controls of the D4090 biplane. Bowen-Buscarlet, an observer, is positioned behind him, scanning the skies with a pair of binoculars, his expression serious and alert. The plane's engine roars in the background, a testament to the raw power and technology that enabled these men to fly high above the battlefields of the Western Front. The 1910s were a decade of rapid advancements in aviation technology, and the RFC was at the forefront of this revolution. The use of aircraft for military purposes was still a relatively new concept, and the risks involved were immense. Yet, men like Auerbach and Bowen-Buscarlet bravely took to the skies, knowing that their actions could make a difference in the outcome of the war. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the men who served in the RFC during the First World War. It also highlights the important role that aviation played in shaping the course of military history.
