EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Richard Brothers (1757-1824), an intriguing figure in British history who declared himself to be the Nephew of God in 1794. Born in London, Brothers was a religious enthusiast who subscribed to the unorthodox beliefs of the British-Israelites. This movement held that the ancient Israelites were the true ancestors of the English people, and Brothers took this idea to an extreme. In 1794, Brothers made his startling declaration to the public, causing quite a stir. He attracted a following of devoted believers who saw him as a prophet and a messianic figure. However, his claims raised concerns among the authorities, and in 1795, Brothers was committed to an asylum in Bethlem Hospital in London. He remained there for eleven years, but he was eventually deemed harmless and discharged in 1806. Despite his time in the asylum, Brothers continued to spread his teachings. He published several books, including "A Revelation of the Divine Will and Pleasure Concerning the British Nation," which further elaborated on his beliefs. Brothers' influence extended beyond his immediate followers, as his ideas influenced other religious movements of the time, such as the Millerites and the Mormons. This print captures Brothers in the prime of his prophetic career, with a serious and determined expression that conveys the conviction of his beliefs. The image serves as a reminder of the complex and often controversial religious landscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Britain, and the enduring power of charismatic figures to inspire both devotion and skepticism.
