EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the pivotal moment in English history when Richard III, the last Plantagenet king of England, engaged in fierce combat on horseback during the Battle of Bosworth on August 22, 1485. The battle, which took place in a field in Leicestershire, England, marked the end of the Wars of the Roses and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. Richard III, dressed in full armor and wielding a sword, is depicted in the center of the image, surrounded by a sea of soldiers on foot and on horseback. His shield, emblazoned with the white boar emblem of the House of York, is held steadfastly in his left hand. The intensity of the scene is palpable, with the clash of swords and the thunderous roar of battle cries filling the air. The Battle of Bosworth was a turning point in English history, as it marked the end of the reign of Richard III and the rise of Henry Tudor, who would go on to become King Henry VII. The eventual victor, Henry Tudor, had been in exile in France and returned to England to challenge Richard III for the throne. The battle is believed to have been won when Henry Tudor's forces, who were equipped with longbows and arrows, managed to dismount many of Richard III's knights and inflict heavy casualties. This historical print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of chivalry, honor, and the clash of swords on the battlefield. The image is a testament to the enduring power of history to captivate and inspire us, and serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that battles and their outcomes have played in shaping the course of human history.
