This evocative photograph captures the essence of a Rifleman of the 95th (Rifles) Regiment of Foot, as he stood proud and ready for duty during the Crimean War in 1855. The soldier wears the distinctive uniform of the regiment, which later became known as the Rifle Brigade, and eventually The Royal Green Jackets in 1966. The 95th Rifles, also known as the "Green Jackets" due to the colour of their greatcoats, were renowned for their sharpshooting skills and were the first British regiment to adopt the rifled musket. This new weapon, with its greater accuracy and longer range, gave the Riflemen a significant advantage on the battlefield. In this image, the soldier is seen wearing the regimental uniform of the time, which consisted of a dark green jacket, trousers, and waistcoat, all adorned with brass buttons and gold lace.
