EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the essence of a Rifleman of the 95th (Rifles) Regiment of Foot, as he stood proud and ready for duty during the Crimean War in 1855. The soldier wears the distinctive uniform of the regiment, which later became known as the Rifle Brigade, and eventually The Royal Green Jackets in 1966. The 95th Rifles, also known as the "Green Jackets" due to the colour of their greatcoats, were renowned for their sharpshooting skills and were the first British regiment to adopt the rifled musket. This new weapon, with its greater accuracy and longer range, gave the Riflemen a significant advantage on the battlefield. In this image, the soldier is seen wearing the regimental uniform of the time, which consisted of a dark green jacket, trousers, and waistcoat, all adorned with brass buttons and gold lace. The distinctive green shako, or bearskin hat, sits atop his head, and he carries a rifled musket slung over his shoulder. The soldier's face is set with determination and focus, reflecting the intense training and discipline that was a hallmark of the Rifle Brigade. The Crimean War, which lasted from 1853 to 1856, was a pivotal moment in British military history. The conflict saw the British and French forces attempt to defend the Ottoman Empire against Russian expansion, and the Rifle Brigade played a crucial role in several key battles, including the Battle of Inkerman and the Siege of Sevastopol. This photograph is a testament to the bravery and skill of the Riflemen of the 95th (Rifles) Regiment of Foot, who played a vital role in shaping the course of military history during the Crimean War and beyond.
